iPhone & iPad Application Custom Icon Design Guidelines
There are many questions people often ask regarding their iPhone
& iPad app icons and i'm here to clarify some of them for you!
iPhone App Icon Sizes:
- Application icon - 57x57px
- App Store icon - 512x512px
- Spotlight Search - 29x29px
iPhone App Icon File Formats:
- PNG for 57x57px and 29x29px
- TIFF/PNG accepted for 512x512 App Store artwork
iPad App Icon Sizes:
- Application icon - 72x72px
- App Store icon - 512x512px
- Spotlight Search - 50x50px (the iPhone OS trims 1px from each side bringing it to 48x48px! don't forget!)
- Settings icon - 29x29px if you plan to supply settings
- Custom Document Icon - 64x64px (if your app plans on creating custom document files)
- Custom Document Icon (large) - 320x320px
iPadApp Icon File Formats:
- PNG for all icons!
Items to remember:
- Keep your corners at a 90 degree angle (square not rounded!)
- Do not add shine/gloss
- No transparencies!
There are also other items that one should keep in mind when creating their icon. Color is always a factor! You want your icon to be eye catching and grab the users attention right from the get-go. You will also want to try to avoid using text on your icon - or at least use very minimal text - too much text tends to look busy and can often be hard to read at the smaller icon sizes. Keep your icon crisp by paying attention to detail while at the same not making it overly cluttered and too busy looking!
That's all for this article! Stay tuned for my next one that will talk about launch/default.png screens for your iPhone and iPad applications!
Enjoy!

This is a great set of information, and everything is laid out quite nicely. Sometimes it can be easy to forget about creating the icon sized specifically for the spotlight search, both for the iPad and iPhone.
